:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dan -- Voltaire makes me feel better about not being optimistic when it is not warranted ... : - all I have to do is touch a word and a dictionary definition pops up. What an advance over language teaching when I was in school! As to the former, Voltaire makes me feel better about not being optimistic when it is not warranted by reality. The societal insanity he so humorously exposes has not changed much in two and a half centuries. The chapter on El Dorado is a thumbnail sketch of what life could be if we would only set it as a goal. Although the story seems to say that we cannot change the world, I note that Voltaire himself changed the world enormously, helping guide and inspire the American and French Revolutions. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Frank Lawler -- Candide often came across much like a Saturday Night Live skit that goes on for ... : I appreciate the value Candide has as, shall we say, a cultural building block -- you can see how it influenced generations of satire, particularly Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children -- but today it can feel very heavy-handed and repetitive. We are so used to satire as a genre today, from The Onion to Steven Colbert, that we forget how Voltaire came to it as something fresh and new after stumbling across Jonathan Swift's work in England. So although to me, Candide often came across much like a Saturday Night Live skit that goes on for far too long, I trudged through it and was glad I did.
